The 2025 Cacao Shortage: Why Chocolate Is Getting More Expensive

If you've noticed your favourite chocolate treats creeping up in price lately, you're not imagining it.

The world is currently facing an unprecedented cacao shortage, and it’s having a major impact on the chocolate industry — from farmers and producers to independent makers and everyday chocolate lovers.

At Marvellous Superfood, we’re also feeling the effects of these global changes.
We use organic cacao in several of our most-loved blends — including our Drinking Cacao, Renewal Blend, and Nutrient Pure Protein.

What This Means for You

Unlike larger companies that may cut corners or change ingredients, we’re committed to maintaining the quality and integrity of our products.

Unfortunately, our own cacao supplier has tripled the price of bulk cacao, which means we’ve been left with no choice but to raise the prices of some of our cacao-based products. We continue to keep our prices as affordable as possible.

This situation is a powerful reminder of how deeply connected we all are — to the earth, to global farming communities, and to the natural systems we rely on.
Every scoop of cacao carries a story of labour, resilience, and nature's challenges.

What’s Causing the Shortage?

Cacao is grown mostly in West Africa, particularly Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana, which together produce over 60% of the world’s cacao supply. In 2025, these regions have been hit by a perfect storm of challenges:

Climate: Extreme weather, excessive rainfall, and rising temperatures have damaged crops. Fungal diseases and pests are thriving in these changing conditions and are harder to control.

Ageing trees: Many cacao trees are old and producing less. Replanting takes time and investment, which small-scale farmers often can’t afford.

Economic strain: After years of low prices for cacao, many farmers have struggled to invest in sustainable farming. Now, with global demand at an all-time high, the supply simply can’t keep up.

Prices Are Hitting Record Highs

So far this year, cacao prices have reached historic levels, in some cases tripling. This is having a ripple effect across the entire industry:

Big brands are raising prices or shrinking product sizes.
Independent producers are trying to balance quality with rising costs.

Shoppers are seeing a noticeable increase in the price of chocolate and cacao-based goods.

At Marvellous Superfood, we want to be open and transparent with our community. We deeply value your continued support, and we promise to keep delivering high-quality, ethically sourced superfood blends you can trust.
